Our Story
We love the Church and believe in its power to love, restore, and care in transformational ways. Our story began in a local church, when a small group of friends came alongside Dilan and his family to offer care and practical support.
In his home country, Dilan faced harassment and government surveillance because of his religious and political beliefs. After receiving death threats, he fled to Thailand with his wife, infant daughter, and mother-in-law in search of safety.
As strangers far from home, the family faced hunger, homelessness, and the constant fear of detention. When their money ran out, Dilan and his wife were preparing to pawn their wedding rings just to pay the next month’s rent.
Moved by compassion, the church opened their hearts and walked with this family through the challenges of life in Thailand.
In March 2011, the family was finally able to leave Thailand, still wearing their wedding rings, and begin a new life in Europe.
That simple act of friendship ignited something far greater. It opened the door for churches and communities around the world to unite in love and support for refugees.
Friendship has been central to Life Raft from the beginning and remains at the heart of all we do. Through friendship, we see refugees beyond their needs and suffering. When refugees are welcomed and valued as equal members of the community, they can begin to rebuild a sense of belonging, dignity, and hope.
“By this we know love, that [Jesus] laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?”
